Generic Versus Customised Wall Design: How it Affects Your Projects' Compliance and Efficiencies

04/09/2023

Have you ever wondered why do some steel stud wall designs seem 'lighter' than others?

A seemingly ‘lighter’ design is often an indicator that further investigation may be required as the design may not be applicable to all walls of the project. Most generic wall designs are intended to be used as a guide only and may require additional work by the Builder or Contractor to include all wall types, building levels, and accurate wind pressures.

A recent example discussed in Issue 6 of our R-SERIES showed a generic wall design provided to a multi-residential project where a baseline wind pressure was applied across all wall types, including pressure-sealed, fire-rated and inter-tenancy walls – meaning all walls were treated like non-pressure sealed walls.

Proper wall design in successful commercial construction is essential for 3 key reasons:

  1. value engineering
  2. risk mitigation and compliance
  3. timeliness of project delivery

It is imperative to understand however, that all wall design services are not the same. Wall designs can either be Generic or Customised. To ensure the 3 key reasons above are adequately addressed, a customised wall design may be your answer.

In our R-SERIES: Generic Versus Customised Wall Design: How it Affects Your Projects' Compliance and Efficiencies, we outline:

·         the difference between generic and customised wall designs

·         our compliant wall design checklist

·         why some wall designs seem 'lighter' than others

·         case study of a current Australian construction project
